Red Ship Blue Ship

After many years of looking for two ships with these colors to pass by the BYC anchorage, it finally happened today!  Bill started looking when we first arrived here 4 years ago as a word-play on the Dr. Seuss One Fish, Two Fish book: One Ship, Two Ship, Red Ship, Blue Ship

Both ships are Car Carriers, the red ship is in-bound to the Canal; the blue ship is out-bound to the Pacific Ocean.

Big Thunder Storm

About 6 PM last evening we noticed black clouds over the city so we unrolled the plastic curtains around the cockpit and got ready to close up if the rains really arrived.  They did arrive and along with the rains there was lots of lightening.  When the flash-to-thunder time got down to 6 counts we packaged our computers in the oven to join much of Lanikai’s electronics.  Bill and I then sat in the cockpit and settled down to watch the show.  The lightening storm passed overhead and we could see the strikes hitting something onshore near the BYC Bar,  sometimes with a count as low as one (about 1000 feet away).  The rain came down in torrents, washing all the soot from the ships and bridge traffic off of Lanikai.  The worst of the storm was over in a little over an hour.  After the thunder passed and the real downpour lessened; the rain continued all night.

We are currently up at the BYC Bar enjoying being outside but undercover with our computers  There is internet access as well here and cold beer.   With the almost constant rain Lanikai would have to be closed  up so it is much more pleasant to spend the afternoon here.

Another Fun Week in Panama

We enjoyed another busy week here in Balboa.  The week started out with a Sunday afternoon concert by Shorty and Slim at the BYC.  It is one of the groups that we enjoy (they grew up in the US Canal Zone) and they sing songs that they have written about the Canal and the environs.

Of course, Bill continued on his computer thru the event.  Actually it was quite noisy with all the chatter thru the first set but the second set was GREAT.

One evening Bill and I enjoyed a pretty sunset with a glass of wine while sitting in the cockpit, just relaxing from the day’s events.

We did our usual Wednesday Dim Sum breakfast with a group of friends at Lung Fung Chinese restaurant downtown.  This time Debbie (from s/v Serenity) was able to go, so the cruisers from BYC all got a ride with her in her car and we all did a little shopping afterwards on the way back to the dock.

Saturday I rode with Shirley while she checked up on things ordered for her remodeling projects in her condo.  She did get lots accomplished over the morning and we stopped at a nice little deli for lunch.  While Shirley and I were driving all over town, Bill took his computer up to the bar area for good internet access all day.

Sunday Shirley picked Bill and I up in the morning for a not-to-longish drive to Punta Chame.  She had other friends that she was meeting there and we joined them for a nice lunch at the rooftop restaurant at a new little resort just a stones throw from the beach.  There was a great view from the restaurant all the way to the high rises in Panama City and to some of the offshore islands.

We had a very nice lunch and then went for a walk on the beach.  The beach was nice white sand but at this time of the year  it is covered in trash that had come down the many rivers in the rain and then was blown ashore by the prevailing southerly winds.

Another night out

Last night we were invited to go out to a German Restaurant here in Panama with a group of our friends.

We enjoyed several hours of good beer, good food and fun visits with our friends.  The service was not especially fast, giving us plenty of time to visit.

As you can see by the pictures we did enjoy our selves with large glasses of beer.  The food was also quite good and the servings large, so again we ate too much.
