July 4th Celebration

The local VFW chapter here in Panama City put on a great 4th of July Celebration for the many US residents here (the Canal transferred from the US to Panama 9 years ago but many US citizens chose to remain in Panama to retire, so there is a large group of expats living here). The meal consisted of barbecued chicken or steak along with salad and rice.  Over 1000 (!!) dinners were served.  The Balboa YC opened the bar in their not-quite-finished brand-new restaurant facilities where the festivities were held. Therefore there was a roof over our heads for the late afternoon rain!

After dark, about 8PM, fireworks were shot off over the water and Bill and I, along with Shirley and Frank (Windsong), went down to the long dock to watch them. For us they were right overhead and quite spectacular. This is the first time in many years that Bill and I have been in the company of enough Americans to participate in a real 4th of July Celebration and we enjoyed it very much.

There was a large group that celebrated the 4th of July at the Balboa YC.

The food was served buffet-style by happy servers and cooks.

We watched the fireworks right overhead and so close that it was hard to get great photos, but Bill did manage to get some.
