This morning we went to the zoo. I woke up the kids early this morning so we could head into Portland by 7:30. We didn’t exactly get out at the time planned but it was close. We were driving down our driveway at 7:45! For me, that is great!!!
We had a great time at the zoo. First stop after the map was the candy machines. The kids had quarters that were just burning holes in their pockets.
I was amazed at all the animals awake and out and about. Most of the were just being fed and it was bringing all of them out of their dens. There was crocodiles that were right at the glass for us to view. They were even moving around.
Some really cute monkeys too. One, a swamp monkey, was in it’s den with glass. When Nicolas put his head down to the glass it licked the glass. Of course there were jokes that Nic was his long lost brother.
We saw some meerkats.
We saw some Gazelle’s. Jacob has a Gazelle Skin on his wall from my Grandpa Ward. It was kind of fun to see what the skin would look like filled with stuff.
Of course there was the petting zoo. This sort of cracked me up. I thought the kids would be bored with the petting zoo, but no way, they wanted to go in and brush the goats.
We also saw an adorable giraffe that was chewing on the window framing. We could hear him grunting and see his looooooong tongue. It was pretty hilarious. Nic and Lexi were pretty impressed when we picked them up so they could see how far down his legs were. Of course there were various bears, hippos, zebras, birds, penguins, and the famous naked mole rats. EEEWWWW! They gross me out every time I see them. I was most impressed with the lung fish. I had never heard of them before. Lexi was bummed that the insect zoo was closed. Emily was bummed that the lion exhibits are still under construction.
On the way out of the zoo we stopped to play in the sand for a while.
Then we had a picnic lunch while waiting for Emily’s Grandma Tennison to arrive.
